living in the cloud

in preparation for my new Dell 10v netbook (shipping in a week or so), i’ve been accelerating the virtualization of almost everything on my laptop. here’s how it works

  • email - Apple Mail IMAP sync to Gmail
  • business data (address book, calendar, etc.) - sync to Google contacts/cal using BusySync
  • project files & folders - everything lives in a single “Current Projects” folder on my desktop that syncs automagically to both DropBox and Mozi (DropBox has a better UI and syncs everytime a change is made. Mozi encrypts stuff on the server so their admins can’t see. i think my final solution will be to use Mozi for any client data that needs to be super-secure, and DropBox for everything else)

the only thing I haven’t found a good solution for is backing up my Archives which is about 25 Gb of personal and professional stuff going back over a decade. i think i’ll probably end up with some kind of webdav solution on my hosting account, but that’s a project for another day. for now, i’m just going to let TimeMachine keep a backup set of that on my 500Gb portable USB drive.

with this setup, i’m pretty much done depending on a single computer to keep my data accessible and backed up. having the NetBook sync all this stuff too means that i should be guarded against the rare event that my main laptop is destroyed and the server farms are too.
